Open Source Software Essay

Free and Open Source Software has been around for quite some time. Free software has always been a controversy. This time someone is trying to take a stance against it. More than just someone but a major software company namely Microsoft. The whole issue is coming against software patents. Patents are there to protect the make, use, and selling of an invention but in this case would deal with software. Microsoft is not keen on the idea of software being readily available especially to businesses at little to no cost. In the business world this is unheard of. To let companies take control and create custom software with almost no cost is being attacked. Microsoft is quoted in a CNN Money article: â€Å"Microsoft takes on the free world† as saying, â€Å"We live in a world where we honor, and support the honoring of, intellectual property,† They were quoted as calling this a matter of principle. I can understand principle and I’m definitely not against making money. I believe that enough is enough. Free and Open Source Software is there to benefit the public. In suggesting that business owners need only buy licensed software or that business owners are only obligated to purchase said software is irrational. Putting aside costs, theoretically let’s say there is a software developer that is hired by a company to create custom software. This company favors Linux rather than Windows not to say that Windows isn’t a great operating system but to say that someone does not have the freedom to create is ridiculous. To limit this company because of some alleged patent laws is preposterous. Eben Moglen, longtime counsel to the Free Software Foundation and head of the Software Freedom Law Center, says that, â€Å"software is a mathematical algorithm and, as such, not patentable. † This statement is critical because of the seeming less attack on inventors and software developers. Software has always been improved and with the strict patent laws associated with Microsoft there is no inventing unless it’s specifically for Microsoft. There needs to be a line drawn and some slack given as to what is actually infringing on patents and what is hindering creativity and innovation. There are current lawsuits with Microsoft versus FOSS (Free and Open Source Software). This has been referred to as a cold war. One side saying they will sue if the other continues to produce and the other saying that if you sue we will be forced to sue back. FOSS has always been under attack since it began. Specifically attacked is Linux. In PCWorld: Microsoft Vs. Open Source: Now It’s Political, â€Å"Once you leave the shores of the U. S. the question would be not if but where is Linux being used† in government, said Matthew Szulik, chief executive officer of Linux software maker Red Hat. The industry is in agreement that government use of open-source software particularly is growing amongst popularity. As much as I would like this to mostly be about freedom of invention and creativity the bottom line is that at the end of the day it’s all about money. No one sees the need to be forced to buy ongoing licensing to use software that most believe the costs are becoming unreasonable. Of course the government is not about spending. (Right? ) As quoted in the article Microsoft Vs.  Open Source, â€Å"Price aside, government officials around the world are also looking for ways to increase use of local software and curb the export of IT funds to major U. S. companies. That is the case in a number of countries in the Asia-Pacific region. † Money makes the world go round. The whole fear that Microsoft has is that it will hurt the pockets of Microsoft. â€Å"Windows still powers roughly 9 out of 10 traditional desktops, with the rest going to Mac and Linux. Linux’s failure to capture desktop share is disappointing to many,† Zemlin admitted. But â€Å"the good news is the traditional PC desktop is becoming less important, and areas where Linux is very strong in terms of client computing are becoming more important. † as expressed in an article of Network Wold: Bashing Microsoft ‘like kicking a puppy,’ says Linux Foundation chief. We could argue that Microsoft is just some big heartless corporation that wants to make money. That is true they are and honestly if anyone expected them to respond in any way different was severely delusional. The act does need to be reformed to show exactly that which is crossing the line in creating software and tying the hands of developers. The debate surrounds the open source code that exists and who should have access to this code. From a business perspective giving out that information obviously would be detrimental to the success of the company. While Microsoft is currently the most dominant software in the business world I doubt that business would be ready to just make a leap to Open Source Software. In the technical world not everyone is a computer geek. Microsoft still has the support to help customers. The shift will take a while and to take down a giant such as Microsoft is not impossible but not something that will happen overnight. The large factor in this is the ignorance of other Operating Systems on a general knowledgebase. Companies and governments that choose to use this FOSS should have the choice. A need for a revision of patent rights and software development need attention.

This has become a natural self-concept and is not taught in a school classroom or by the inclusion of a subject on gender differences in educational curriculum. The problem of assessment and analysis of various countries adolescents in terms of gender differences and nature of self-concept is compared from one country to another. Whether in this era of globalisation, the cultural and gender differences continue to persist among young people as in the past or is there going to be any change in the mindset of young boys and girls. Multinational companies, global operations and global culture and environment have facilitated many young professionals to work in a diversified environment in which there is no sign of gender differences except to the fact that female employees are considered for maternity leave and to seek assistance for nursery care. However, in many parts of the world, inspite of tremendous potential of technology development, the basic of gender differences continue to exist in terms of superiority of masculine over feminine and this is by and large is acceptable with the fact that, men are more powerful and hard working than women in any part of the world, whether it is in United States, Japan, Europe, UK or Asia. Researchers have made an indepth research on the concept of gender and on the concept of self. 2. Literature Review Josephs et al (1992) researched that men are more individualistic than women and carry high self-esteem in every aspect and in terms of gaining respect and dignity is also greater than women. This describes that the outlook of men towards society and life is much different from what women search for in life. Men are considered as more superior for all good purposes than men. Kashima et al (1995) in an article conducted a research on gender and self from the view of collectivism and individualism on 1000 psychology students from 5 cultures. 2 collectivists from Korea and Japan, 1 from Hawaii, and 2 individualists from Australia 2 from Mainland USA. All the participants concluded that gender differences and self-concept are basically dependent on the emotional level and dependence. Cultural differences are also due to the response from respondents and those acting as independent agents. There was also another research conducted on gender differences that may not be same in various countries and there were two investigations conducted on this aspect. The first investigation based on the self-concept of 609 middle class adults from Lithuania, Hong Kong, USA (Watkins Yau, et al.. 1997) It was found that within the country, self-components were much smaller than between-country effects. The second investigation was conducted on 1580 social science undergraduates from 8 countries represented by 4 individuals, 5 collectivist cultures (Watkins Adait, et al 1996) and it was found that collectivism and individualism is not sufficient for explaining cultural differences in self-concept. Exploration of self-concept has been performed by TST as a powerful tool for assessment of cultural differences in the nature of self-concept. The Adult Sources of Self-esteem Inventory (ASSEI; Elovson Fleming, 1989) was designed to meet this function and this instrument contains two sections with 20 identical items. The first section describes subjects to identify as to how important each item is for self-esteem and the second section is about rating of self-satisfaction in various aspects. Markins Kitayama 1991 has aruged that in a cross cultural setting self-esteem is more appropriately seen in items of self-satisfaction instead of self-enhancement. 3. Research Design Importance of self and self satisfaction with 20 possible sources of self-esteem was collected from countries which were both western and non-western. By conducting varimax factor analysis, the results of average male and female values of each country are obtained from factor scores. This is called as ecological factor analysis. These factors are further used to examine correlations with another country level data such as in economic indicators and cultural indices (Hofstede’s 1983) Further Hofstede 1990; Chinese cultural connection 1987 it was argud that cultural instead of individual analysis is the most preferred factor for examining the differences among cultures. The overall saitsfaction for Turkish students was coefficient alpha of . 97 with internal consistency with ASSEI measurement. Further for US sample, the median test-retest reliabilities over a 2 week period indicated . 69 and . 67 respectively (Davis-Zinner, 1990) With the Rosenberg self-esteem scale (Rosenberg, 1965) the ASSEI total satisfaction score in this research as . 37 and . 52. Social desirability was measured by the marlowe-crowne scale and had only minor influences on ASSEI satisfaction scores. The respective correlatios were . 28 and . 23. Cross cultural study validity evidence was performed on 139 Turkish undergraduate students (Inelman, 1996) and found that the coorelation was . 65 and . 55 between ASSEI unweight and unweighted satisfaction scores. General esteem as per Coopersmith self-esteem inventory from Swedish study (Watkins, Yau, Dahlin and Wondimu, 1997) which revealed a coorelation of . 45 with self-esteem as assessed by the TST. Factor scores were used in Individualism-Collectivitism by Gender Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and to correlate with culture level data such as Gross National Product (GNP) and Hofstede’s indices were available. 4. Realiability and Validity ASSEI is a 20 item inventory that requested each respondent to rate either on 1 for very low and 10 for very high rating scale for the importance on self on gender basis and gender satisfaction with different aspects of person’s self-concept in terms of physical, social, ethical, familial and intellectual. All the students were studying in reputed universities in urban areas including South Africa. The participants were from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, U. S. A, White South Africans, and 10 samples from China, Ethiopia, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Nigeria, Phillippines, Zimbabwe, and Black Africans according to study of Hofstede 1983. Appendices and collected survey and data revealed that most of the males and females were leading satisfactory relationships with families, appropriate discharge and delegation of responsibilities and were honest in relationships whereas in terms of earning capacity there was less satisfaction and particularly, south African males and females were leading low satisfactory lives in terms of self-esteem. 5. Statistical analysis Table 1 explains about Ecological Factor Analysis of Standardized Country Means of ASSEI importance which is based on the 4 factor analysis (Cattell, 1966) The four factor solution is categorized into Factor 1 – Intellectual achievements which is rated as 23. 6%, Factor II – Family values and personal success which is rated as 19. 1%, Factor III – Intelligence vs Group morality which is rated as 12. 1% and Factor IV – Social relationships vs physical abilities which is rated as 10. 3%. Table 2 details about factor scores on 4 ASSEI importance factors for 15 country Groups by gender which is based on Individual Collectivism x Gender ANOVAs. Satisfaction levels in family relationships, morality levels, personal satisfaction, cultural, physical appearance social relationships and group living styles were some of the factors that were included in the table. Table 3 details about Means of culture, Means for combined Individualist and Collectivist. Culture by gender for importance and satisfaction factor scores. Table 4 is the summary statistics from Individualist/Collectivist x gender analysis of variance of importance and satisfaction factor scores. Table 5. correlates of importance and satisfaction factor scores with cultural dimensions and Gross National Product (GNP) 6. Conclusion The ecological research conducted on 3604 undergraduate students proved to be very useful for findings on gender differences and nature of self-concept. It was revealed at various levels through factors that there is an overall satisfaction in family relationships and society relationships apart from physical appearance and cultural life style. Females are more careful in family relationships than males. The research and findings of Bond (1994), Schwartz (1994), Joseph (1992), Watkins Adair, (1996), Trompenaars and Williams (1995) were proved to be very beneficial in this research. The critical study on gender differences along with nature of concept is a very crucial study of human relationships particularly when it is researched on 14 countries wherein different cultures and traditions, languages are involved, this study result is absolutely benefitting and also stands as an example for further analysis of Individualism and collectivism. Case Study Tapal Tea (Private) Limited Pakistan was the second largest tea importer of the world after England. Almost all the tea consumed in Pakistan is imported. Tea is popular beverage in both Urban and rural areas of Pakistan. The total retail market of black tea was estimated at 140,000 tons i.e. Rs. 35 billion in 2001. The retail market of tea is growing at rate of 2.6 % annually. 95 % of tea imported from Kenya comprised of leaf tea and dust tea. In Pakistan consumption of tea in urban areas is 40% while 60% contributed by rural area . Tea is sold in two categories of branded and unbranded packages. Branded tea constituted 55% and unbranded has 45% market share. Industry Competition: In Pakistan, Unilever is market leader with 60% share while Tapal has 26% share and the remaining 14% includes small players such as Kohinoor,vital,isphaani. UNILEVER-The Market Leader: Unilever is major competitor of Tapal, under taken several marketing mix activities to enhance their product sales of Lipton Yellow Label Brooke Bond Supreme brands. Unilever introduced 500-grams packaging to cater demand from tea stalls. They also made changes in Lipton logo. From pricing point of view Unilever revised prices from time to time to time due to various changes in micro and macro environment. For distribution Unilever has 6 regions with 526 distributors nationwide. They also support some of the weak distributors by giving them three-wheeler by investing Rs 5 millions to improve their performance. Introduction of Tapal tea Tapal was the largest Pakistani owned tea company in the country founded by AdamAli Tapal as a family concern in 1947 at Jodia bazaar in Karachi. Initially they started from an unbranded tea to cater tea stall and restaurant in Karachi. This unique brand named as FAMILY MIXTURE soon becomes the largest selling brand in the tea market. Tapal is supposed to be pioneer in number of development in tea industry of Pakistan which includes new category of DENEDAR tea ,introduction of high quality tea from Kenya, ISO 9002 quality certification, soft tea packs and metal free bags in Pakistan. Brands owned by Tapal: Tapal Chai Family Mixture Danedar Leaf Blend Chenak Dust Mezban Super Dust Gulbahar Green Tea Tapal Special Teabags Safari PF Marketing Sales promotion Activities by Tapal: In order to increase and retain the market share of Tapal in tea industry, Tapal applied number of marketing mix strategies to improve their sales in period 0f 1998-2001. Tapal changed packaging of its leading brand, Tapal DENEDAR to revamp the brand image and to fight with other counterfeit brands , they also launched the sachet packs. Tapal revised prices about four to five times in the given period of time to stay competitive with other brands. During the period of 1998-2001 Tapal spent 1.75% of its annual retail sales on advertising promotion. Sales Management: Tapal sales territories were divided on the geographical basis. The whole market is divided into two regions Northand South both are independent of each other. Northern region included Punjab and Khyber Pukhtonkha while the southern region consisted of Sindh and Baluchistan. Northern town has 6 zones which are further divided into 23 territories. Southern region has 6 zone having 17 territories. A territory executive assigned to each territory. Total distributors in Pakistan are 400, 203 in northern region and 197 in southern region. SELECTION CRITERIA The territory executive needed to be a permanent resident of the area assigned and should have 2-3 yrs of selling experience along a minimum graduation degree. Hiring of territory executives was done at regional level with the final approval from the Head Office (Karachi). ÂÂ   SETTING SALES QUOTA/TARGET The market gap was analyzed at the first hand for setting sales target for the territory. Then the actual sales of Tapal, Unilever and others in the previous year were added up to determine the market size. The competitor sales were estimated through market intelligence from competitor`s distributors. The sales forecast is given by the distributors which are then assessed by the territory executives who submit the revised estimates to Zonal Managers. It is then approved at the final level by the Regional Managers. The annual quota is communicated to the territory executives and distributors by the second week of July each year. Problems Issues faced by Northern Region of TAPAL: Declining sales Negative variations in sales quotas assigned to territories. Rising selling expense Number of distributors are not appropriate with population size and no of outlets Unbranded tea suppliers are not considered by Tapal Zonal Managers. Zonal managers had set too optimistic targets for territory managers that are not realistic. Zonal mangers were unable to assess and improve the performance of territory managers. Zonal managers had not appropriately planned sales territories. Zonal managers were unable to add no. of distributors to cover the wider area they are just working with current distributors and increasing the no. of retail outlets. From exhibit 9, we can sort out that out of 23territory executives just 1 is showing excellent performance, however 8 executives are showing poor performance and 8 are just fairly performing their jobs. From exhibit 10 we can see that the company was too optimistic and it set its target sales too high as compared to previous year in all territories specially in Rawalpindi II (of about 354% increase in sales target), Sarghoda 260% increase Faisalabad 59.2% increase Recommendations to Overcome Problems: Zonal manager should consider unbranded tea products while focusing on MARKET Gap. When distributors give their sales forecast to territory executive, they must also concern with the problems faced by the distributors and try to solve them as Lipton helps their weak distributors by three wheelers. Clearly define the territory boundaries to Eliminate cross area sales problems. And take strict action on it. Company should cut-down unnecessary distributors to reduce selling expense, and increase new distributors where there is a market gap. Reduced the basic salary structure and Increase the incentive system so as the sales force motivate to achieve targets. Sales Quotas must be realistic and attainable in consideration with market potential. Zonal manager make teams of territory executives having good and excellent performance with executive showing poor performance so as poor one can learn the tactics to be successful.

Philosophical Aspects of Literary Objectiveness ABSTRACT: Gadamer’s hermeneutic philosophy avoids the problem of literary objectiveness altogether. His approach witnesses the general fact that an indifference towards literary objectiveness in particular, leads to a peculiar neglect of par excellence literariness as such. It seems obvious, however, that the constitutive aspects of the crisis of literary objectiveness cannot be shown to contain the underlying intention of bringing about this situation. At this point, one can identify what could probably be the most important element in a definition of literary objectiveness. In contrast to ‘natural’ objectiveness and objectiveness based on various societal conventions, the legitimacy of a literary work is solely guaranteed by its elements being organized in accordance with the rules of literary objectiveness. Thus when the crisis of literary objectiveness intensifies, literariness will also find itself in a crisis. This crisis detaches new, quasi-literary formati ons from various definitions of literariness. When literary objectiveness ceases, however, to be understood as a system constituted by various objective formations aiming to correspond in one way or another to the ‘world’, scientific analysis of literary objectiveness will be rendered impossible. The crisis of literary objectiveness thus brings about the crisis of the theory of literature and the philosophy of art. Gadamer explicitly argues that the scientific approach proves to be inadequate in the analysis of artistic experience. This attitude results in the categorical rejection of a scientific orientation (and so in a complete indifference towards literary objectiveness), but he seems to overemphasize an otherwise correct thesis on the non-reflexive character of artistic experience. It is the anti-mimetic and Platonic character of Gadamer’s aesthetic hermeneutics that determines the status of literary (artistic) objectiveness in his system of thought. What is of crucial importance, however, is to point out that this aesthetics entails a fundamental reduction of the significance of literary objectiveness. As soon as the essence of aesthetic object-constitution is taken to be re-cognition (plus the emanating aesthetic possibilities), the absolutely natural interest in the original object represented by a work of art.Undoubtedly, Gadamer’s conception answers a number of questions that tend to be ignored by other theories. It is just as obvious, however, that Gadamer completes here the aesthetic devaluation of the objective domain. It is not the characteristics of the ‘original’ that constitute the image, but in effect the image turns the original into an original. Paraphrasing this claim one arrives at a near paradox: not objectiveness makes a work of art possible, but a work of art lends objects their objectiveness.

Students :: essays research papers

  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Students that struggle with reading in school is not a new problem. This has been a challenge for teachers for years and continues to be an issue in school systems nationwide. As stated in video program five, â€Å"While a child’s development may be delayed, the developmental pattern will remain the same.† (Bear, 2004 ). This really lets school officials know that these students are reachable, but the teachers need to provide appropriate instruction for the student’s developmental level. There are several things to be considered such as: grouping, type of instruction, spelling words, and vocabulary.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Teaching special education, it seems that my students are usually grouped in the teacher/child ratio. Within those small groups there are a variety of reading levels and adjustments that have to be made. We have reading groups everyday in my classroom. My students along with my teammates students are grouped according to ability. Even with that type of grouping remediation for some students is needed because of their rate of progress. It was stated in video program five that struggling readers need repetition, practice, and explicit instruction (Bear,2004). I try to provide this through different modalities. One strategy is a computer program called Intelli-talk.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This is a program similar to Cowriter or Write Out Loud. It allows information to be inputted into the system by the teacher and it will orally read the directions, any reading or activities that go with the lesson. This program also allows pictures to be associated with vital vocabulary in the reading in the form of a word bank. By clicking on a picture the students can review a brief definition of the word and hopeful this will aid them in completing the vocabulary/comprehension activities. This program will also allow the teacher to make a word web and using the pictures mentioned early, the students can match the correct word with the picture. This is a great way to have students review independently what was read or discussed previously in a small group setting. This also allows the teacher to engaged in another activity with other students without having to be directly one on one with another student.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  My students are tested annually on 400 basic sight words using the Brigance test. Any words that the students do not know how to read are given to them as spelling words. The students are expected to know what the word means, how to read and spell the words by the end of the week. Supplemental activities for classwork and homework are given as a reinforcement.

The use of an â€Å"if† statement as the fulcrum of his philosophy places the entire philosophy on shaky ground. One would be forced to assume the Christian belief system is true, at least the most basic concepts, in order to believe in Evans’ philosophy. Additionally, Evans uses his arguments as particulars to jump to his final conclusion; a leap of faith, if you will.

Their skin color affects their status in society there. They can be denied education, jobs etc. A fair skin person is considered attractive regardless that the person have a healthy figure. My shocking discovery was that many Indian people, mostly women are so obsessed with fair skin. They will go to the ends of the Earth to lighter there skin.They believe ark skin complexion is ugly and the lighter guarantees more opportunities in life. For example If you are fair skin there are bigger changes to get married , get better job and better opportunities in life. Issues that dark skin girls face are different for each girl. One girl was told that she Is a dark skin and Just because of that she will not will be wealthy and rich In her life. That her dark skin complexion will not bring her a husband. H ow was she feeling about that?She TLD get too upset because she knew that she will find someone that will like her for who she is. After being rejected couple times finally she found her husband with who now she has family. But not only now, Indian people are having this issue long time ago. Elder people are telling how some of them had been rejected and some of the weddings also been canceled. The girls had been called ugly. One girls said that she was feeling angry but on the end of the day she knows that not only the outside look what is important is inside too, it's the persons heart.One of the way they are trying to get fair skin Is by using fair skin cream. The fairness creams marketing strategies, which show that a girl can't get married unless she Is fair, change the mindset of Individuals. The visual media has changed Its strategy so much that even fair skin people also use fairness products They use different types of cream. One of them is the power brand called Fair and L ovely. Skin lightening products like this one is not Just used locally, the usage goes viral. The advertising they have for the cream is Just amazing .From the way how they are advertising it to the enormous number of users. Most of them tried to light their skin while on the other side the rest of the population face the problem, accepting It and moving on In life. My attention was drawn to the young dark skin boy, the way how he was treated from the people around him, his friends especially from his teachers. He tried to get fair skin with using creams. The influence from his surrounding affected his decision to different from the other kids. Imagine having no friends in school Just because of your skin color? Ewing ashamed of himself not wanting to be social with fear that his errs might beat him up because of his skin color. The way how they talked to him , the influence that it had on him like a young person who is now developing his morals, his personality , his behavior. I am glad that he is not that influenced from the teachers and that and that he has his family support to grow and develop by accepting his dark skin color like straight not weakness. Man also have been influenced by this trend of bleaching skin. They also thing that being like skin can bring you more opportunities in life.They still believe that if you are dark skin you are poor person and no wealthy. Through the different stages this fair skin stereotyping or Colorist has a different effect. From its impact on self-esteem to it impact on career's and marriage. From one side, I believe everyone is free to do whatever they want . On the other side its sad the opinion for fair skin, that only like that people are beautiful, is so deeply ingrained into the culture. Lets something that people from India don't do it for themselves it's about society and pleasing others.

Scope and Limitations The study will focus on the significant relationship of public ratings to the financial condition of media companies in the Philippines in terms of liquidity, solvency and stock value.Specifically, the study will focus on public relations which may directly affect the public ratings of these media companies. Primary sources will be gathered by the researchers by visiting university libraries, reading articles and researches that are related to the study. Secondary resources will be also gathered via internet and finance websites These resources will prove that public relations have a significant relationship with public ratings. Furthermore, in determining the significant relationship between the variables (public ratings, liquidity, solvency and stock value), comparative analysis will be used.In order for comparative analysis to be done, the researchers gathered financial statements of both media companies from years 2009- 2011. The research ers also gathered the public ratings of these media companies that were gathered by market research companies that each media company has hired (Nielsen ratings and Kantar Media). Furthermore, the stock value for each company will be gathered. Definition of Terms Public Ratings Refers to media ratings issued by AGB Nielsen and Kantar Media market research firms in the Philippines that rate the subject corporations’ overall television viewer ratings.Chapter 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE This chapter presented literature reviews related to the study. The section presents the writing of different personalities both foreign and local conducted by the proponents during their research which have been beneficial to the study. It involves reference materials and detailed facts stated by few people and pioneer in the field of investment that will serve as the foundation for sorting out and solving problems that may be encountered in the development of the proposed study.Literature an d studies presented in this study contained information, concepts, and findings that were contributory and fitting for the selection and development of the theoretical framework of the study. Synthesis was also created based from the gathered information and facts in literature and studies. Related Literature Public relations is now recognized as an important tool of management in production, distribution, and finance. â€Å"To have the people in your ommunity think well of you and your company, to win a measure of acceptance on the part of certain special publics, and lastly, as you devoutly hope, to gain some degree of recognition on the part of the general public. † is what media companies should do to gain better and more effective relations with the public. Related studies According to a book of Romeo P. Virtusio entitled â€Å"How to make it in PR: PR Veterans Tell Their Stories (2007),† Public Relations has a significant effect on Public ratings also known as me dia ratings.In this article the author emphasized that Public Relations is a significant asset to a company’s Public Ratings. The article also showed that there are long run relationships between the two, both directly affects each other progressively. A study conducted by a group of students from De La Salle University Taft entitled â€Å"Public Relations Firms in the Philippines and Their Life Cycle (2009),† explained that PR bears distinguishing marks for a company’s life as â€Å"failures† and â€Å"survivors. The study mentioned that Public Ratings can seriously affect a company’s orientation or leadership profile, vision, client management, financial management, preferences for innovation, and risk- taking propensity. Public Relation firms equally keep pace with the dynamic market and other forces to recognize the stage of decline which can trigger their demise, as in the case of defunct firms, and steer well through the known external envir onment/ public. This study also elaborated further the real effects of Public Ratings to companies. The operating relations firms are the survivors.They keep pace with the dynamic market and other forces in the known external environment, They keep abreast of their organizational life cycle by means of organizational blueprints for updates, interest in cultural orientation and judicious application of technological changes. Adaptation through selection is resorted to by the firms, so that alignment with the very satisfactory if not excellent business performance can be attained, to assure themselves of longer life cycle. It is in this regard that the applicability of the â€Å"Stewardship Theory† in management could be tested.The firms survive on the strength of their organization, systems and structures and competencies alone, which can prolong their life cycle. But even the masterful application of innovative management orientation and well- plotted strategy, which combines entrepreneurial orientation and stewardship, the resultant business performance still serve as a significant determinant of their life cycle. The â€Å"failed† firms are those whose management took for granted or ignored the essential requirements for a healthy and robust business concern.Deviations from the factors of entrepreneurial orientation and stewardship, and control of elements in the internal and external environments, generally lead to failures. An article written by Oscar S. Villadolid emphasized that in Public Relations, knowing the culture of the market, the set of beliefs and the value systems, traditions and ways of doing things, is what makes a strategy for good PR more effective. Mass Media companies will never get high media ratings if they do not do this. SynthesisThe studies and articles presented are closely related to the current study considering the different variables used. The primary focus was to determine the relationships between Public ratings also known as media ratings and the mass media companies’ financial condition. The studies presented assessed the significant relationship between public relations and public ratings. This helped in scrutinizing facts that are viable information to the completion of the study. Chapter 3 RESEARCH METHDOLOGY This chapter discusses the manner by which the study was conducted.The first portion shows the research design and the purpose of using such design. The second portion discusses the source of data and the third portion tells about the method of data analysis. It also discusses the ways in which relevant data needed for the research was collected and treated. Research Design This research paper will assess the relationship of public ratings and mass media companies found in the Philippines in terms of their profitability ratios mainly focusing on the companies’ return on assets, return on equity and return on investments for the years 2009 to 2011.The study will also focus on the companies’ financial condition that would help evaluate their performance in terms of solvency, liquidity and stock value. The study will use descriptive research design in order to analyze the relationship of selected mass media companies in the Philippines. Likewise, the correlational research design will be used to determine the impact of public ratings on the variables that were presented for the years 2009 to 2011. Respondents of the Study The subjects of the study would be the mass media companies specifically ABS-CBN and GMA Network that are listed under the Philippines stock market.Locale of the Study The study will be conducted in the Philippines specifically in Manila where the subjects are currently situated. Research Tools and Instruments The data that will be used for this study will be the public ratings posted by the market research companies hired to assess the ratings of ABS-CBN and GMA Network. Likewise, it shall use secondary data such as Finan cial Statement and Stock market performance. In order to assess the relationship between the variables mentioned, the researchers will gather the Financial Statements of these media companies for the years 2009 to 2011.Data Gathering Procedure The mass media companies’ data about profitability ratio and financial condition will be gathered through the use of information and communications technology by surfing the internet and researching through world-wide web. In addition, other data that will be used in this study will be collected through the references coming from the Library of the De La Salle University located at Taft mostly in the General collection and Periodical section. The researchers will also use secondary data collection technique in gathering information about the study.Secondary data will be derived from journal articles, manual/handbook and magazines as well as in the different educational, governmental and organizational websites for some related informati on about public ratings and mass media companies. Secondary data will also be obtained from related studies conducted for academic purposes. Data Analysis and Interpretation The researchers will analyze the data through the use of different methods for research. To test the relationship between the mass media companies’ public ratings, profitability ratio and financial condition, the correlational research design will be used.Moreover, the regression research design will be used to analyze and compare the financial statements of the media companies and their respective public ratings for the years 2009 to 2011. Descriptive design was also used in the study. Correlation analyses will be done to determine if significant relationship among the variables used in the study is present. You said you had some patients asking why when a different medical assistant takes care of them they do not do the same things as their regular medical assistant. After watching each of the medical assistant for one week and asking each of them different question about how they perform their job, they each gave me a different answer.After hearing this and what I seen I feel we are in need of a procedure manual. This manual will not let them know what is expected of them but how it is to be performed in this office. With this manual in return all of the medical assistant should perform the same no matter which doctor they are working for. This should also cut down on the confusion with the patients and put then at ease when the medical assistant they are used to taking care of them cannot be there that day. Not only will it comfort the patient it will also cut down on chance of mistakes being made that ould hurt a patient or cost some a life. With this proposal I feel it would be a great benefit for the medical assistant we have now and any new ones in the future. It would give a clear cut of their job definition and job expectation. That would also reduce our liability for mistakes by someone not know what to do or how to do it. The procedure manual I am speaking about would be one that would cover both administrative and clinical duties. I would break each of these down into two sections with subsection in each sections.There would be an index foe quick access and each would also have a signature page which each medical assistant would have to sign and that would be put in their personal folders. Once again let me state based on what I have seen and been told by each of the medical assistants I feel this is the only way to give them cl ear cut instructions on what is expected of each of them and how it is to be done. With that said here is the basic outline of the manual. Medical Assistant Manual Outline I. Introduction What the manual is for and a brief overview of the manual. II. Administrative Duties 1. Scheduling and receiving patients. 2. Preparing and maintaining medical records. 3. Performing basic secretarial skills and medical transcription. 4. Handling telephone calls and writing correspondence. 5. Serving as a liaison between the physician and other individuals. 6. Managing practice finances.III. Clinical Duties 1. Asepsis and infection control. 2. Ta king patient histories and vitals. 3. Perform first aid and CPR. 4. Preparing patients for procedures. 5. Assisting the physician with examinations and treatments. 6. Collecting and processing specimens. 7. Performing selected diagnostic tests. 8. Preparing and administering medications as directed by the physician. As you can see I have included both administrative and clinical duties to be performed, there are many medical assistant out there that think you just take care of a patient but they will see it is much more than that.Once again feel free of any changes that you want made. A procedure Manual is a must for any job. It provides valuable information about your job and can answer the most common questions. It does not matter the size of your office a procedure manual is there when you need it to refresh your memory or answer your question. With this manual in place we all will be held accountable for our actions and we will perform as a better team that supports each other. The following is my check list for the Medical Assistant procedure manual. 1) To make sure there is a need for the procedure manual.I will include all the parts that are needed to perform the medical assistant job. I will include the safety risk, and include common legal issues and how to avoid them. 2) I will write a rough draft of this manual and let doctor Markesberry and let the front desk supervisor look it over for any change the need to be made before final draft. 3) I will then have a meeting with the medical assistants and front desk people to go over the manual. At which time I will answer any question about the manual or if there is anything that they would like to see in the manual. ) I will rewrite the manual after I receive the suggestion and answered the question. Once I have done this and send this for approval from upper management. 5) Once I have got the approval I will make a copy for everyone involved and some extra copies for new hires and for people who lose th eir there will be a master copy which will be kept in the supervisor office. I will then have meeting every two weeks for updates and to go over any problems that might arise. After you call the patient up to the desk at that point you will ask the patient name, DOB, address and phone number. Once you have made sure this is the right patient, you will then ask to see their insurance card.When they give you the insurance card you need to verify that it is in effect, after that you collect their copay. Upon arrival this is the process: 1. Pt. sign 2. Call pt. to desk 3. Verify DOB, Address, Phone number 4. Confirm appointment. 5. Ask for insurance card, verify it. 6. Collect copay Scheduling appointment can be making an appointment for a doctor in our office to making an appointment for an outside doctor, test, or lab work. Whichever it is you need to make sure of the same information when rece iving a patient. With a couple of exception of the patient sign and collecting their copay.This is the way the process should go: 1. Check the availability date of the appointment. 2. Ask patient if this is a go date and time is right for the patient. 3. Appointment is out our office give them insurance information, DOB, name, and address of the patient. 4. For an outside appointment you will give them the name of the doctor ordering the appointment to be made. 5. Give the patient an appointment card or instruction on where to go the appointment. 6. Then fax all information to the appointment before the patient go’s so they can have a copy.When making the outside appointment always fax the order and patient information to the office the patient is going that way they have a backup copy beside you call and sitting up the appointment. Then put the information in the chart or on the computer so if there is confusion when the patient get there you have the information at hand. Pr eparing and maintaining medical records When you receive reports, physician notes from outside offices you need to put these in the patient charts. But before you can put them in the charts you need to let the physician know the reports or progress notes have come in.That way if some is abnormal the doctor can call the patient, once the doctor has sign the reports or notes you then need to place them in the charts. If they are still using paper charts you will need to pull the chart and go to the correct section and file the reports. But if you have electronic charts you will need to scan the chart then move the report to the right chart in the right place. Please use the following steps: 1. Sort all the reports and physician notes. 2. Place a received date stamp on them. 3. Then give to the doctor for review. 4. After receiving they back sort them by name and date. 5.Scan them in the charts. 6. After all reports and notes have be scanned in charts and filed shred the documents. 7. Check that all orders have been signed and all doctors’ notes have been signed. At the end of the day or at lunch you need to fill all charts that are done and pull the next patient charts do to come in. This needs to be done every day to keep within the HIPPA and Medicare standards. If the doctor tells you to call a patient and give them their results that is the only time you can do so. You cannot otherwise and never tell the front desk people to do this they are not trained to do this and it is unethical.Performing basic secretarial skills and medical transcription From time to time you may need to transcribe doctor’s dictations. If the patient would need and copy of the visit or if a former employee would need a reference. Then you would type this up and give it the patient. Sometimes the doctor will just tell you to right up something and he will sign it after you typed it. However it is done you must get the physician to sign it before it leaves the office. After it is signed place a copy in the chart or make a copy to have on file in case the patient would need another copy later.Handling telephone calls and writing correspondence When receiving a phone call from a patient you need to get the patient information so you can make sure that you have the right patient pulled up on your computer. Once you have done this then ask the patient how you may help them. After the patient tells you want they need right it down, never just try to keep it in your head. Before you can do whatever the patient called for you might get interrupted and forget what it was or who the patient was. This is very important if the patient that called is not one of your regular patients.If you are calling a patient to tell them of an appoint change or to give them lab or test results never leave the information on the answering machine or with any other person. When you call and you get an answering machine just leave your name and who you are trying to contact and a sk them to call you back and leave your number. This also applies to leaving message with someone other than the patient. When writing correspondence to the patient is direct and use word that they can understand. Do not add anything extra; include your name the physician name, phone number and your address.If sending a correspondence to another physician always be professional use approve word and medical terms. At the end of the correspondence type the physician name and have him sign it. As with anything that goes out of the office or comes in the office you need to chart it or it is not done. Before mailing out any correspondence proof read it. Serving as a liaison between the physician and other individuals From time to time you will act as a liaison between your patient and your doctor. Sometime after the patient has seen the doctor they will come out when they are leaving and ask you what did the doctor mean or what did he say.The patient does not always understand the doctor so you knowledge of medical terminology is a must. Because you have to translate the medical meaning to terms that the patient can understand. This is critical because if the patient does not understand what is being told to them they will not know how to take the medication or how to be compliant. But liaison between the patient and the doctor is not the only time you might have to do this. You might have to as a liaison when Drug representative, medical equipment representative or other doctors until the physician is available.This is a very important part of your job because you are the first person they see, you are setting the impression for the office, so always be professional. Managing practice finances This is a vital part of any office, if no money is coming in the office will have to close. With that said you will be responsible for balancing to payment with the number of patient and get the money ready for deposit. You will also have to collect any money due on medicati on that is picked up at the office if there is a charge.This also goes for any medical devise or equipment that is given to the patient that is a charge for. So for all money that is being deposit to the office account you need a deposit slip. You will fill out the date, amount of cash in bill and coins. Then you list all checks one at a time on a separate line; put the last name from the check and the amount of the check. Once this is done you add all the cash and the checks and write the total at the end, you put a copy in with the money that goes to the bank and you keep the other for your books.Clinical Duties Asepsis and infection control After each patient you are to clean and sterilize all instruments, you are to wipe down all the patient come into contact with in the room after each patient. You are to wear gloves when handling any body fluids or cleaning any open wound. You are to change the trash after any patient that has a procedure done or after any dressing changes. If giving a female examine you need to change the trash if speculums are put in the trash. All of this kind of trash is to be put in the biohazard trash bag not a regular one.When cleaning the room after patient you need to make sure to clean the bed, counter tops, chairs, and any other instrument. This way you do not spread infection. At the end of the day you need to check all your room to make sure they are clean and sterilized, and stock for the next day. If you have a patient coming in for an appointment who might have the flu you need to give that patient a mask when they arrive so while they are sitting in the waiting room they do not spread anything to the other patients. If the patient has the chicken pox bring them back as soon as they get to the office do not let them wait in the waiting room.After you see them clean and sterilize the room so you are not exposing another patient to the virus. If helping with a procedure wear a gown and gloves if necessary wear a facemask or shield. You were taught universal precaution make sure you use then not only for the patients but for you and your family. Taking patient histories and vital signs Taking patient history you need to be very through this can give you clues to what might be going on with your patient. It all so let you know will they are at risk of getting in the future. You need to ask about their parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents.You need to ask about child hood illness, past surgical history, any know drug allergy, any food allergy, any medication they are taking and they need to bring their bottles. This all plays a very important part in patient care. When taken vital signs you need to do the following: 1. B/P 2. Pulse 3. Respirations 4. Height 5. Weight 6. Temperature 7. Pulse ox. When you check you patients vital you must touch the patient so to can tell how their skin feels, if their pulse is regular if you never touch your patient you will miss thing that can hinder the patient tre atment. Performing first aid and CPRWhen performing first aid always wear gloves, clean stabilize and dress the wound. Never move the patient until the physician tells you to. Check for shock. Keep the patient warm and conformable. Give oxygen when needed; never remove any object with the doctor telling you too. When you are giving CPR you need to check if the patient is conscious, check respiration, and then check for a pulse if there is none provide CPR. Once you start CPR you cannot stop it until you are told to or the patient is breathing and has a pulse of their own. These things are a must to know you must keep all CPR certification valid.After you perform any these thing clean and sterilize everything that is reusable and through away everything else. Clean the room and put everything back in order. When calling in a patient after having to perform something like this reassure the next patient and go about you task at hand. Do not give the next patient any information about w hat has happened who the patient was or how there are doing. Preparing patient for procedures When you have a patient coming in for a procedure, try to keep the patient clam. Reassure the patient tell them what is going to happen and when it is going to happen.Answer any question they have, if you don’t know the answer tell them the doctor will be more than happy to answer their question. You will need to do vital signs on the patient at the beginning of the procedure and after. You might have to during if the procedure is going to be long or the patient is going to be put out. Once this has been done ask about known drug allergy you need to chart all of this. Then you get the entire instrument ready you get any dressing that might be needed, any local anesthesia ready. You help the patient get ready, by undressing or any preparation that need to be done before the procedure.Try to keep thing light between you and the patient this helps them relax. Once the procedure is done help them get dressed or help them get cleaned up. Give them all the instructions and anything that they might need until they come back to see you. Ask them if they need help getting home or going to their car. Assisting the physician with examination and treatments When helping the physician with the examination tells the patient so they do not get nervous. Tell them what you are doing. Assist the doctor any way possible with his examination be professional. If you are to hold down n a part of the body tell the patient what you are doing any why. Any thing you can do to easy the process helps the patient and the physician. Keep any exposed areas covered until the doctor is ready to examine that area. After the examination ask the patient if they need help getting dressed and if not step out the room until they are done. Once they are done go back and check on them and make sure they are alright. Ask them if they have any question for the doctor or for you. When the doctor is done and give you the discharge information go over it with the patient. Collecting and processing specimensWhen collecting specimens always wear gloves, tell the patient what kind of specimen you need. Tell the patient how you are going to collect the specimen. Clean the area before collecting the specimen. If it is a UA tell the patient how to do the specimen and how much you need and were to leave the specimen when they are done. If collecting blood makes sure you draw it in the right tube. Get everything you need before you go into the room were the patient is. Let the patient know what you are going to do and how you are going to do it. Get everything you need laid out and ready within hand distant.Clean the area and draw your specimen after you get what you need make sure the patient is fine and put a bandage on the site. Take the specimen in the lab area and spin any tubes that need to be spun and label them after you draw them. When you are done with all this you put them in a la b bag to go an outside department. Keep any specimen cold or frozen until it is time to send them out then put them in cold pack for the lab to pick up. Performing selected diagnostic tests When performing test such as EKG’s you need to let the patient know what you are going to do how you are going to do it and why you are doing this test.Help the patient get ready and have them lie back on the table, let all male patient that you might have to shave their chest if there is a lot of hair because the patches will not stick. After you help the patient onto the table and get ready place the patches on their chest, leg and arm. Connect the leads to the patient and connect the machine. Once you have this done tell the patient to hold still and preform the test. After you are done unhook the leads and remove the patches, help the patient off the table and help them get dresses.Then give the EKG report to the doctor so he can tell the patient what it said and how to treat them. As with any thing you use from patient to patient use need to clean all the leads. If the ask you to perform a pulse ox test you let the patient know what you need them to do and then you record the information and let the doctor know what the reading was. The physician will then tell the patient any and all results. Preparing and administering medications as directed by the physician When the physician tells you to give the patient medication write down the amount, dose, how to be given.If the medication is an injection, make sure you have the right size needle, right amount of medication and were it is the go such as arm or hip.
